They were designed for foster style slugs. Foster slugs had a "rifling" on the side of them, but it likely didn't impart any spin to the slugs as they deformed upon firing. If you are buying a new one I have been told the newer Ithaca's are better than the older guns. More time has been put into the fit and finish.
