Phosphine oxidation state
Phosphine oxide are typically produced by oxidation of organophosphines. The oxygen in air is often sufficiently oxidizing to fully convert trialkylphosphines to their oxides at room temperature: R3P + 1/2 O2 → R3PO This conversion is usually undesirable. In order to suppress this reaction, air-free techniques are often employed when handling say, trimethylphosphine. WebMar 6, 2024 · Phosphine doesn't form dihydrogen gas on contact with water so $\ce{H}$ is in oxidation state +1 and $\ce{P}$ is in oxidation state -3. Reaction with strong acids leads to $\ce{PH4+}$ which has similar structure to the ammonium ion. For these reasons even for $\ce{As}$ in $\ce{AsH3}$ the oxidation state of $\ce{As = -3}$.

WebApr 12, 2024 · Reactions towards oxidants are also described. The latter result in the two-electron oxidation of the phosphorus atom from +III to +V, and are accompanied by a strong geometric distortion of the NNN pincer ligand. By contrast, cooperative activation of E–H (HCl, HBcat, HOMe) bonds proceeds with retention of the phosphorus redox state.
WebChronic suppression of aerobic respiration epigenetically or by mutation likely pre-adapts cells to a low energy state, preventing a metabolic crash and energy crisis upon exposure to phosphine. ... found that the increase in the uptake of phosphine in susceptible insects was correlated with an increase in phosphine oxidation within the cells ... WebThe primary phosphine oxides showed triplets centered at δ=15 ppm, which indicates that there are two hydrogen atoms are bounded to a phosphorus atom. Secondary phosphine oxides were characterized by a doublet at δ=60 ppm, which indicates that only one hydrogen atom is bounded to a phosphorus atom.
